Leaves (6)7.5–40 cm long (with some lower ones to 60 cm); petioles (0.8)1.1–3.7(4.6) cm long; leaflets in (10)14–45 pairs, (0.7)1–5.2 × 0.2–1.5 cm, oblong to oblong-elliptic, obtuse to slightly emarginate at the apex, apiculate, slightly narrowed and asymmetrical at the base, entire, glabrous, punctate above with minute black dots, obscurely mottled dirty-red beneath; petiolules 0.25–2 mm long; stipels 0.5–2 mm long, usually persistent; stipules 0.7–1.5 cm × 2–6 mm, ovate-lanceolate to oblanceolate, long acuminate, caducous to persistent.

Raceme (2.5)5–23 cm long, 2–15-flowered; peduncle (1.8)4–9.5 cm long, glabrous; pedicels (0.8)1–3.5 cm long, glabrous; bracts 0.6–1.2 cm × 1–3.5 mm, linear-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, long acuminate, basally striped reddish-brown, glabrous, caducous to occasionally persistent; bracteoles (3)4–9 × 0.5–1.75 mm, linear-lanceolate, glabrous.
Standard (1.9)2.1–3.4 × (1.7)1.8–3.2 cm, broad, rounded, apically emarginate, the appendages small and without free tips; wings (1.7)2.1–2.8 × 0.5–1 cm, with an upper basal tooth and with lamellate sculpturing in upper basal section on outer face; keel 1.9–2.4 × 1–1.5 cm, limb subquadrate with basal tooth projecting upwards.
Pod (20)25–36 cm × 3.5–6 mm, linear, long acuminate, glabrous, 25–37-seeded; septa 8–9 mm apart; lower suture angular, up to 4 mm wide, broader than the keeled to somewhat angular upper suture which opens first.
Seeds greenish-black, heavily mottled black, 5–5.5 × 2.5 mm, 2.5 mm thick, cylindrical; hilum in small central circular pit surrounded by obscure rim aril.
Seedlings with cotyledons shortly petiolulate; first foliage leaf simple, larger than cotyledons; second foliage leaf paripinnate.
Calyx (0.6)0.7–1.3 × 0.5–1.1 cm; tube glabrous; teeth acuminate, 1.5–4 mm long, shortly woolly on margins and inner surface.
Petals usually blue, less frequently mauve or purple, rarely white (e.g. R.M. Davies 2879).
Stems pithy, glabrous, unarmed, marked with dark green or brown vertical lines or dashes.
Annual or biennial herb to subshrub 2.5–5 m tall.
