Characteristics

Erect branching semi-woody herb 0.5–1.5 m. tall, the stems almost glabrous, usually aculeate.. Stipules caducous, narrowly triangular, up to 5 mm. long, almost glabrous; leaf-rhachis up to 6 cm. long, usually aculeate, sparsely pilose at the base and at the bases of the leaflets; leaflets in 7–15 pairs, oblong, up to 13 mm. long and 4.5 mm. wide, glabrous.. Racemes 3–6-flowered, glabrous, or sparsely pilose when young; rhachis up to 4 cm. long including a peduncle of up to 2 cm., which is not aculeate; pedicels glabrous, 6–10 mm. long.. Calyx glabrous except for the margin; receptacle 1.5 mm., tube 3.5 mm., teeth broadly acuminate, 1 mm. long.. Blade of standard elliptic, 12–18 mm. long, 12–19 mm. wide; appendages with free tips 0.5–1.8 mm. long (fig. 49/9b, p. 332); claw 4–5 mm. long; blade of wing 12–17 mm. long, 4–7 mm. wide, shortly hooked at the base; claw 3–4 mm. long; blade of keel 7–10 mm. long, 4–5 mm. wide at the base and 6–7 mm. near the apex; basal tooth at an angle of 0°–40° with the 8–10 mm. long claw (fig. 49/9a).. Filament-sheath 13–17 mm., free parts 3–5 mm., anthers 0.8–1 mm. long.. Ovary glabrous, 20–35-ovulate; style glabrous, 3–4 mm. long.. Pod almost straight, not or hardly torulose, 8–14 cm. long, ± 2.5 mm. wide, 2 mm. thick at the centre, less at the sutures, with a beak 2–3 mm. long, 18–25-seeded; septa 5–6 mm. apart.. Seeds somewhat mottled, ± 4 × 1.8 × 1.2 mm.; hilum 0.3 mm. long.
