Sherbournia G.Don

Genus

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae

Characteristics

Scandent shrubs or lianes. Leaves petiolate, opposite, mostly thinly coriaceous; stipules rather large, oblong or elliptic, obtuse, deciduous. Flowers hermaphrodite in 1–several-flowered inflorescences mostly appearing lateral (actually terminal) on one side of the stem at successive nodes or rarely appearing terminal, often ± sessile. Calyx-tube turbinate, sometimes ribbed; tubular part of free limb short; lobes 5, rather large, obtuse, contorted and overlapping to the right. Corolla rather large, the tube funnel-shaped to campanulate, constricted at the base, thickly silky outside, glabrous inside save for a densely barbate portion at base in constriction; lobes 5, short and broad, overlapping to the left. Anthers ± sessile, inserted in the throat of the corolla; pollen grains single. Ovary obconic, 2(–3)-locular; styles clavate, sulcate, the stigma scarcely separating into 2 lobes; ovules numerous, immersed in vertical rows on the 2 placentas. Fruit oblong-ellipsoid, many-seeded; seeds reticulate and wavy-rugulose.
