Characteristics

Perennial tree, 3-15 m high; monoecious, much-branched; branchlets glabrous or sparingly hairy; bark smooth. Leaves alternate, firmly chartaceous to thinly coriaceous; lamina elliptic-ovate, elliptic, elliptic-lanceolate or elliptic-oblong, base cuneate or rounded and slightly cordate, apex subacute or obtusely to acutely shortly acuminate, margins shallowly crenate-serrate. Inflorescences terminal or subterminal, all male or with 1-3(4) female flowers at base; male bracts ovate-suborbicular, 3-7-flowered; female bracts 3-lobed. Male flowers calyx lobes 2 or 3, ciliolate; stamens 2 or 3, free. Female flowers calyx lobes 2 or 3, ciliolate; ovary 2(-4)-lobed, smooth; styles 2-4, subpersistent. Flowering time Aug.-Nov. Fruit a 2(-4)-lobed capsule. Seeds subglobose, smooth.
