A herb. It keeps growing from year to year. It has large oval tubers. The plant is covered with short hairs. The stems can be erect or lying over and it often branches low down. It grows 30-40 cm tall. The leaves vary is size and shape. They are narrow and can be oblong or sword shaped. The flowers are in simple loose, one sided groups. There are 2-7 flowers in a group and they are near the ends of the branches. The flower petals can be red, purple or white. The fruit is a capsule on stalks 5-6 mm long. The seeds are flattened and 1.3 mm long.
Erect or sprawling, shortly hairy, tuberous-rooted perennial to 70 cm. Leaves linear-oblanceolate to oblanceolate. Flowers in subsecund, raceme-like, monochasial cymes, white to purple, calyx 10-20 mm long, petals bifid, carpophore 6-9 mm long. Seeds discoid, peripherally winged.
Flowers in simple, lax, one-sided, 2–7-flowered racemes at the ends of the branches; peduncle up to 20 cm. long, usually rather elongate; bracts up to 8 mm. long but often less, subulate to linear-lanceolate; pedicels very short or up to c. 1·5 cm. long on the lowest flowers.
Erect or sprawling, shortly hairy perennial, up to 0.7 m tall, not viscid. Leaves linear-oblanceolate to oblanceolate. Flowers in a ± one-sided, raceme-like cyme, white to purple, calyx 10-25(-35) mm long, petals bifid, carpophore 6-9 mm long.
Petals reddish-brown, purple, pinkish or white, 1–3 (–5) mm. long, often minutely puberulous; claw about the same length as the calyx; limb about half the length of the claw, bifid to about half way; coronal scales whitish, ± semicircular.
Perennial herb with parsnip-like or ovoid-tuberous roots, more or less pubescent with short hairs on all aerial parts; stems erect or ascending, up to 70 cm. tall, branching low down, coastal forms often with procumbent vegetative shoots.
