Characteristics

Herbs perennial, 30--60 cm tall. Roots robust, lignified. Stems erect, multibranched from base, sparsely pubescent with short retrorse hairs at base, apically viscid. Basal leaves spatulate-oblanceolate, early withered. Cauline leaves with short sterile axillary branches, broadly oblanceolate, 2--7 cm × 5--11(--15) mm, abaxially antrorse-scabrid or with short hairs at veins and margin, adaxially not hairy, coarse, midvein sunken, base attenuate into short petiole or cuneate, apex acute to acuminate. Flowers erect, in a lax ± regular thyrse; cymules long stalked, opposite, 1--3-flowered. Pedicel 1.5--4 cm, slender, viscid; bracts linear to linear-lanceolate, 3--8 mm, herbaceous, ciliate. Calyx tubular, clavate in fruit, 1.2--1.7 cm × 2--3 mm, subglabrous, sometimes with sparse short hairs at veins, veins green or violet; calyx teeth ca. 1 mm, ciliate. Androgynophore 5--8 mm, glabrous. Petal claws included or slightly exserted beyond calyx, narrowly cuneate, glabrous, auricles not obvious; limbs pale red, obovate, 8--11 mm, deeply bifid, lobes oblong; coronal scales very small. Stamens and styles long exserted; filaments glabrous. Styles 3. Capsule ca. 1 cm. Seeds dark brown, globose-reniform, ca. 1 mm. Fl. Jul--Aug, fr. Sep.
