Herb, perennial, glabrous, glaucous. Stems decumbent, diffusely branched, 8–25 cm long. Leaves sessile, linear-lanceolate, with basal leaves similar to cauline ones, glaucous, 5–40 mm long, 2–7 mm wide. Inflorescence lax, 1–2 (–4)-flowered; bracts ± herbaceous. Pedicels 10–45 mm long. Calyx c. 12 mm long, truncately obovoid with calyx-mouth hardly contracted, inflated, 20–30-veined, glabrous, glaucous; calyx lobes triangular, acute. Petal limb to 10 mm long, white, rarely pink, deeply bifid. Styles 3. Capsule conical, 6–10 mm long, with 6 recurved teeth; carpophore 3–5 mm long, glabrous. Seeds reniform-ellipsoidal, 1–1.2 mm long, brown, acutely tuberculate.
Maritime shingle, cliffs and stony ground, rarely on cliff ledges, gravelly lake shores or by alpine streams inland; at elevations up to 1,000 metres.
