Characteristics

Erect shrub 0.8–1.6 m high; branchlets grey, densely stellate-hairy; prickles 1–8 mm long, scattered on stems, leaves and peduncles, largely absent elsewhere. Leaves (adult): lamina linear to lanceolate, 4–11 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, discolorous, margin entire or with basal pair of obtuse lobes, often sinuate; upper surface green, often 'wrinkled', sparsely stellate-hairy, veins inset; lower surface grey-white or yellowish, densely stellate-tomentose; petiole 0.3–1 cm long. Juvenile leaves with lamina to 14 cm long, with 1 or 2 pairs of shallow or deep obtuse lobes towards base, petiole to 4 cm long. Inflorescence 3–6–flowered; peduncle absent or to 10 mm long; rachis to 10 mm long; pedicels 5–10 mm long at anthesis. Calyx 4.5–6 mm long, densely stellate-hairy; lobes triangular, 1–3.5 mm long. Corolla rotate, 24–30 mm diam., purple. Anthers c. 5.5–6.5 mm long. Berry globular to oblate, 11–16 mm diam., pale green or greenish white. Seeds c. 2.5–3 mm long, white to pale yellow/brown.
