Characteristics

Erect herb or shrub, 0.2-1.5(-4) m, armed or unarmed; young stems stellate-pubescent, trichomes porrect, translucent to orange-translucent, sessile or stalked, stalks up to 1.5(-2) mm, rays 6-12, 0.2-0.4 mm, midpoints ± same length as rays or reduced or elongated to 0.8 mm; prickles straight or curved, 0-5 mm long, 0.2-2 mm wide at base, round or flattened. Leaf blades drying concolorous to weakly discolorous, yellow-green to red-brown, ovate to elliptic or lanceolate, 3.5-17(-40) x 0.6-10 (-19) cm, 1.5-4 times longer than wide, base rounded to cordate, usually equal, margin usually entire, sometimes lobed, the broadly rounded lobes 2-5 on each side, apically rounded (obtuse or acute) up to 1 (-3) cm long, extending up to 1/4(-1/2) of the distance to the midvein; apex rounded to acute; moderately to densely stellate-pubescent, trichomes on abaxial surface porrect, sessile or stalked, stalks to 1 mm, rays 6-8, 0.2-0.6 mm, midpoints reduced or to 0.8 mm, trichomes of adaxial surface smaller; primary veins 4-7 pairs; petiole 0.5-4(-l1) cm, 1/6-1/4 (-1/3) of the leaf length. Inflorescences simple or occasionally branched once, 2-11 cm long, with (2-)5-10(-40) flowers; peduncle 0-10 mm long; rachis 0.5-8 cm long; peduncle and rachis unarmed; pedicels 0.7-3 cm on long-styled flowers, 0.5-2 cm long, in fruit 1.5-3 cm long, with 0-10 prickles. Flowers heterostylous, (4-)5(-6)-merous, the basal 1-3(-5) long-styled. Calyx 7-15 mm on long-styled flowers, 5-10 mm long on short-styled flowers, lobes deltate to long-deltate, sometimes foliaceous on long-styled flowers, 5-10 mm on long-styled flowers, 1.5-5 mm long on short-styled flowers, acute to obtuse or acuminate, unarmed or with up to 20 prickles. Corolla mauve to purple, 2.5-4.5 cm in diameter on long-styled flowers, 1.8-4 cm in diameter on short-styled flowers, lobed for 1/4-1/3 of its length in long-styled flowers, lobed for 1/4-1/2 of its length in short-styled flowers, the lobes broadly deltate, 7-15 x 7-13 mm on long-styled flowers, 5-9 x 4-11 mm on short-styled flowers. Stamens equal; anthers 6.5-9 mm on long-styled flowers, 4-9 mm on short-styled flowers. Ovary glabrous or stellate-pubescent in the upper 1/4; style 10-15 mm long on long-styled flowers. Berries 1-2 (-4) per infructescence, striped when young, yellow-orange at maturity, spherical, 1.5-3 cm in diameter; fruiting calyx with 0-30 prickles. Seeds 2.7-3.2 x 1.9-2.6 mm.
