Leaves petiolate; blade narrowly ovate to elliptic, 10-55 x 5-20 mm, acute to obtuse, base cuneate, margins prominently lobed, lobes obtuse, discolorous. Flowers: in a lateral cluster; corolla 5-10 mm in diameter, violet; Nov.-Apr. Fruit an orange, globose berry, 8-10 mm in diameter.
Sprawling or prostrate shrublet to 60 cm; spines to 5 mm long, recurved, yellow. Leaves elliptic, often deeply lobed, midrib spiny beneath, to 5 cm long. Flowers few in clusters, white, to 5 mm diam. Berries orange to red, to 10 mm diam.
