A woody vine. It has curved spines that enable it to attach to other plants. The vine grows 2-6 m long. The stems are cylinder shaped and hairy. The leaves are alternate and 10-18 cm long by 4-7 cm wide. They are narrowly oval. The leaves are dull and they are lighter green underneath. The leaves and leaf stalks can have spines. The flowers are in groups 2-4 cm long. The flowers have lobes about 1 cm long. The fruit is a round berry and red or orange. They can be 1.3 cm across. There are several seeds.
