Characteristics

Small to large monopodial epiphytic herbs. Stems elongate, often scandent, either with or without leaves; roots produced all along the stems, elongate, sometimes climbing by the roots. Leaves if present distichous, fleshy or coriaceous, unequally bilobed at the apex, articulated to sheathing leaf-bases, sometimes twisted at the base to lie in one plane. Inflorescences 1–many, axillary, few–many-flowered, spreading. Flowers minute to medium-sized. Sepals and petals free, subsimilar. Lip entire to 3-lobed, usually very small, ecallose, spurred at the base; spur conical, cylindrical or clavate. Column short, fleshy, lacking a foot; rostellum short, 2-lobed; pollinia 2, ovoid; stipes 1, linear to oblanceolate; viscidium 1, linear to lunate or reniform, often large in relation to the stipes.
