Characteristics

Trees, ca. 16 m tall, thinly white sericeous when young, soon glabrate. Leaves opposite, subcoriaceous, mostly clustered near the ends of the branches, elliptic, abruptly and obtusely acuminate at the apex, rounded to attenuate at the base, 15-21 cm long, 4.5-10.5 cm wide, drying reddish-brown, glabrous or nearly so above, the midrib sunken, glabrous below except sparsely appressed-pubescent on the midrib, with a few oval or less frequently rounded, sunken, dark, opaque glands scattered over the surface but especially in the lower 1/2 of the blade along the margin and near the midrib; primary lateral veins 9-11 pairs, moderately straight to the middle, then curved upward and loosely connected, the tertiary veins prominulous, the margins strongly revolute; petioles densely appressed-pubescent, 1.5-2.5 cm long; stipules lanceolate, ca. 6 mm long, bilobed at the apex, clasping the petiole at the base, fused to the petiole and remaining with it when the leaves fall, densely appressed-pubescent outside, glabrous within. In-florescences terminal at the ends of short branches on the older stems, ca. 20 cm long; axes and peduncles densely ferruginous, appressed-pubescent with T-shaped trichomes; peduncles shortly branched, ferruginous-tomentose, each bearing 2 flowers; bracts narrowly ovate, acute to acuminate, 1.5-2.0 mm long, weakly clasping at the base, pubescent outside, glabrous inside, ciliate; pedicels 4-6 mm long, appressed pubescent; bracteoles alternate, minute, narrowly ovate, with stalked axillary glands 1-2 mm long, the stalk flattened, pubescent, the gland disc shaped, 1.0-1.5 mm diam. Flowers with the sepals 3.5-6.0 mm long (in fruit), ovate-oblong, rounded at the apex, verrucose and pubescent outside, glabrous and smooth within, glandular, the glands 10, oblong, ca. 2 mm long, the apical portion somewhat narrower, turned weakly outward; petals not seen; stamens persisting with fruits ca. 2 mm long, somewhat flattened, pubescent at the base, the anthers ovate-oblong, 0.7 mm long; ovary bicarpellate, bilocular, the styles 2. Fruits bicoccoid, bilobed, the cocci ellipsoid, ca. 5 mm long (dried), blackish on drying, shiny, joined to each other for only about 2/3 of their width on the inner side.
