Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Spermacoce

Characteristics

Erect annual herb 17–60 cm. tall; stems ± simple or sparingly branched, 4-angled, bifariously shortly pubescent in the grooves.. Leaf-blades linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, 1.3–8.5 cm. long, 0.22–1.25 cm. wide, acute at the apex, cuneate or ± rounded at the base, sessile, ± thick, with thickened whitish margins and midrib, glabrous save for the margins and main nerve beneath or scabrid to pilose on both surfaces, the margins nearly always ciliate with short stiff hairs; stipule-sheath united with petioles, 5–6 mm. long, ridged, hairy or shortly pubescent with 5–6 ciliolate setae 0.2–1.2 cm. long.. Flowers sessile in axillary and pseudoterminal (1–)3–6-flowered clusters at many of the upper nodes, the apical 2–3 often run together to form a short spike-like inflorescence; bracteoles 7 mm. long.. Calyx-tube glabrous, oblong, 1.5 mm. long; lobes 2, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, similar to the leaves in texture and indumentum, 0.3–2 cm. long, 0.8–1.8 mm. wide, ciliate.. Corolla white or blue; tube cylindrical to narrowly funnel-shaped, 6–7(–11) mm. long, 3.5 mm. wide at the mouth, with a ring of hairs inside 2.5–3 mm. above the base; lobes oblong-lanceolate, 3–6 mm. long, 1.2–2.2 mm. wide.. Filaments 1–3.5 mm. long.. Style exserted 1.5–6 mm., finely papillate; stigma capitate, ± 7 mm. wide.. Capsule subglobose, 3.5–5 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, crowned with the calyx-lobes, opening right out, the valves joined only at the base, almost circular in outline, convex, 3.5 mm. long, 4 mm. wide, glabrous, transversely wrinkled; septum persistent, shiny.. Seeds dark brown to black, oblong-ellipsoid, 3–3.6 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, 1.3 mm. thick, shining, very finely reticulate, with a ventral groove and a conical yellowish basal appendage (elaeosome) 1.1–1.5 mm. long.. Fig. 51/28, p. 344.
