Characteristics

Leaves (1)3–10 cm. x 0.2–0.8 mm., filiform-subulate, pointed at the apex, sessile on to stipule sheaths which are long and narrow at sterile nodes c. 5 x 2 mm. and with 1–2 setae mostly 3 mm. long but much wider at flowering nodes 0.5–1 cm. wide, with 3 short subulate setae up to c. 1 mm. long or sometimes ± truncate.

Flowers 10–50 in tight clusters up to 1.3 cm. wide, supported by the stipular involucre at the terminal and 1–2 immediately lower nodes; bracteoles filiform, 2–3.5 mm. long, broadened at the base, shortly spathulate, purple and hairy at the apex.
Seeds shiny brown, 2.5–2.8 x 0.9–1.2 mm., narrowly oblong-ellipsoid, slightly broadened at the apex, very obscurely angled dorsally, ventrally with a narrow furrow containing a few rhaphides and with a basal cream aril-like cellular elaiosome.
Capsule with upper half purplish, c. 4 mm. long, ± obovoid, opening at the apex but valves cohering, densely covered with distinctive flattened white or purple hairs on upper half.
Annual erect strict herb 15–90 cm. tall with 1-several slender unbranched or sparsely branched glabrous or nearly glabrous stems.
Corolla tube white, c. 1.5 mm. long, funnel-shaped; lobes blue or purple, c. 1 mm.
Calyx tube 1 mm. long, hairy above, lobes 8, ± purple, minute, c. 0.5 mm. long.
