Woody herb 0.4–1 m high, much branched, densely leafy in the distal parts; branches winged, scabrid, the wings narrow, entire or denticulate.. Leaves grey-green, aromatic, narrowly lanceolate to linear, 1–5.5(–9) cm long, 0.2–0.7(–1.9) cm wide, base decurrent into the wings, margins dentate to subentire, apex acute to obtuse and mucronate, scabrid and glandular.. Glomerules mauve or purple, terminal on the branches, globose to short-cylindrical, 7–20 mm long, 7–13 mm in diameter;peduncle 0.3–4 cm long, narrowly winged or ribbed, often with an aborted glomerule; receptacle ovoid to ellipsoid; glomerule bracts hidden at anthesis, the proximal linear to lanceolate, 3–4 mm long, hispidulous, the more distal similar to the capitulum bracts; capitula distinct in bud but becoming less so, on (very) short secondary receptacles, with 16–24 bracts, these narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, 3–5 mm long, (spinulose-) acuminate, ciliate and pubescent distally..
