Characteristics

Erect herb 0.2–0.3 m high, much branched; branches winged, the wings dentate and glandular, the branches sparsely puberulous.. Leaves narrowly obovate, 1.5–6 cm long, 0.6–1.5 cm wide, base decurrent, margins dentate, apex rounded and mucronate, hispidulous and glandular on both surfaces, sparsely puberulous on midrib and margins.. Glomerules depressed globose, 6–9 mm in diameter, covered by the glomerule bracts; peduncle 3–6 mm long, not winged; receptacle flat; glomerule bracts oblong to broadly ovate, 4–6 mm long, 2.5–3.5 mm wide, margins scarious, rounded, glabrous or very sparsely hispidulous; capitula sessile, viscid; capitulum bracts 4, the laterals concave, the other two flat or slightly concave, 4–5 mm long, scarious, apex rounded or truncate.. Florets 2–3 per capitulum; female florets absent (?in inner capitula) or 1–3, on a stalk up to 1 mm long, filiform, tube 2–2.6 mm long, lobes < 0.1 mm long, style 1.8–2.7 mm long, branched; inner florets 2(–3?), tube cylindrical, 2–2.8 mm long, lobes 0.2–0.3 mm long, glabrous and becoming corky, anthers 1.5–1.6 mm long; style 2.7–2.9 mm long, distally papillose, shortly bifid but with parallel branches.. Achenes of outer florets ellipsoid, 0.8–1 mm long, densely hairy, those of inner florets ellipsoid, slightly flattened, 1.1–1.4 mm long, glabrous.
