Leaves lanceolate, the lateral veins scarcely evident, strongly coriaceous, shiny, smooth, glabrous; pet-ioles rigid, stipules connate, collar shaped, coriaceous, truncate, without teeth or lobes. Flowers terminal, the female flowers solitary, the male flowers sessile, pedicellate, disposed in a stiff narrow spike of well spaced, several flowered clusters, calycine cup thick, glabrous, the lobes obsolete, the margin erosulose; corolla short, carnose, glabrous, the lobes carnose, shorter than the tube. Fruits capsular, the pedicels nodding, elongate; capsule large, oblong, round in cross section, resembling a smooth squash, the wall fleshy, lignose on drying; seeds numerous in a jellylike pulp.
