Herb or slender subshrub 0.5–2 m. tall, with ± erect branched glabrous or very sparsely pubescent stems from a long taproot, woody at the base.. Leaves broadly elliptic to ovate, 4–12.5 cm. long, 2–7 cm. wide, distinctly acute at the apex, cuneate and attenuate into 0.5–2 cm. long petiole, glabrous, regularly sharply serrate with spreading teeth, the sharply acute apices central.. Spikes slender, elongate, many-flowered, 14–45 cm. long, ± 2.5 mm. diameter; bracts lanceolate, 7 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, ± glabrous, long-acuminate.. Calyx cylindrical, 7 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, 5-ribbed and shortly 5-toothed.. Corolla dark purple-blue, mauve or royal blue with light or white throat; tube 7–8 mm. long; limb ± 1 cm. wide, the lobes 2–3 mm. long, 3–5 mm. wide.. Stigma exserted.. Mericarps dark, linear-oblong, 3–4 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, reticulately ribbed.
