Characteristics

Shrub 0.5–3 m high. Stem and branches obscurely tetragonal, pubescent, glabrescent when old. Leaves petiolate; petiole winged, 5–20 mm long; lamina ovate-elliptic, 30–130 mm long, 25–70 mm wide, cuneate towards base, crenate, pubescent. Spikes as thick as those of S. jamaicensis but thinner than S. mutabilis, 250–800 mm long, 5–6 mm diam. (without open flowers); bracts oblong-ovate, 7–9 mm long, c. 2 mm wide. Calyx sunken in rhachis furrow, 8–9 mm long, equally 4-toothed, puberulous to glabrescent with a few glands outside, glabrous inside. Corolla purplish blue; tube cylindrical, 11–16 mm long, villous inside; limb 8–12 mm diam. Stamens inserted in corolla throat. Ovary elliptic-oblong, glabrous; style 10–13 mm long. Fruit not known.
