Characteristics

Tree. Leaves pinnate; leaflets entire or serrate. Inflorescence an axillary thyrse bearing clusters of yellowish flowers, male and female in the same inflorescence or (not in mainland Africa) the trees dioecious. Calyx opening precociously, united in a cup to at least half-way, shallowly 5-lobed.. Petals absent or (not in mainland Africa) 5.. Disk cushion-like, hairy. Stamens (6–)8. Ovary 3-lobed, 3-locular with one ovule per locule; style equal to the ovary, 3-furrowed. Fruit of 1–3 spherical mericarps, dehiscing along a vertical line. Seeds spherical, nearly totally covered in a fleshy aril.
