Genus

Angiosperms > Apiales > Apiaceae

Characteristics

Trees, shrubs or perennial herbs with simple or imparipinnate leaves, commonly flowering before the leaves appear but sometimes together with them. Leaves imparipinnate to trifoliolate, subternate or simple, regularly dentate; sheaths abrupt, rather short. Umbels numerous, compound, pedunculate; involucre and involucel present, small. Flowers polygamous, hermaphrodite or ♂, variously disposed. Calyx-teeth small but distinct, persistent. Petals creamy to yellow, sometimes suffused with or entirely blackish purple or greenish, glabrous, emarginate above with a large, acute, inflexed lobule. Fruit very strongly dorsally compressed with wide but not thickened marginal wings and 3 prominent subalate, narrow dorsal ribs, glabrous; stylopodia obsolete, the short styles arising from the broad disk; vittae absent (or occasionally very rudimentary according to some authorities); carpophore bifid to the base. Endosperm strongly compressed, narrow, slightly concave on the centre of the commissural face.
