Species

Angiosperms > Malpighiales > Malpighiaceae > Stigmaphyllon

Characteristics

Liana; essentially glabrous to sparsely appressed-pubescent especially on younger parts (trichomes type A); stems reddish brown. Leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic to oblong-ovate, usually abruptly acuminate and often down-turned at apex, obtuse to rounded or subcordate at base, 6-13 cm long, 2.5-6.5 cm wide, often glaucous beneath, lateral veins 9-11 pairs, reticulate venation prominulous on both the surfaces, the margin entire; petioles 1-3 cm long, with a pair of round apical glands. Inflorescences of umbelliform, 4-or 5-flowered corymbs, axillary or terminal; peduncles appressed-pubescent, 12-35 mm long, bibracteate. Flow-ers to 2.5 cm wide; pedicels mostly 1-1.5(2) cm long, glabrate; sepals rounded at the apex, sparsely pubescent and ciliate, all but 1 bearing 2 conspicuous glands; glands oblong-subrounded, to 2 mm long, glabrous; petals 12-14 mm long, gla-brous, yellow, rounded but clawed at the base, the margins fimbriate; petals on either side of glandless sepal slightly to prominently cupular and usually fitted together after anthesis (cupped over the fertile parts); stamens 10, unequal, 6 long, equalling style, 3 of these situated beneath or adjacent to stigmas, producing much pollen, 3 long stamens sterile or producing little pollen, 2 short fertile stamens on either side of glandless sepal, the other 2 short stamens on the op-posite side of the flower, the anthers with connective produced above, whitish, globular, fleshy; pollen tan, sticking together loosely; stigmas 3, green, the one opposite the glandless sepal symmetrical, spathulate, with an active gland near the apex, the other 2 stigmas adjacent, broadly expanded, with a slit on the inner side, this oozing pollen from the anther below. Fruit usually of 3 samaras fused at base, reddish at maturity, especially the outer margin and apex, pubescent especially at the body; the dorsal wing 2-3 cm long, ca. 1 cm wide, with a small crest or lobe on inner margin above the body and with reduced lateral wings which are variously lobed or sometimes divided into 2-4 narrow appendages.
