Inflorescences axillary, capitate, enclosed in a capacious campanulate involucre, which is constricted below the middle when dry and lobed at the apex, each with several sessile flowers supported by subspathaceous membranous bracteoles.

Seeds small, angular with thick testa and fleshy albumen; testa cells ± oblong with few large perforations in the lumen and slightly thickened walls with bead-like extra thickenings at intervals.
Ovary (2)3–5-locular; ovules numerous on long linear placentas; style filiform, glabrous, divided into 2–5 linear stigmatic lobes, included or shortly exserted.
Corolla narrowly tubular funnel-shaped, pubescent at the throat; lobes short, valvate; limited heterostyly occurs.
Calyx tube oblong or obconic; limb-tube tubular with 5 erect lanceolate lobes with minute intercalary lobes.
Erect woody herbs or shrubs, the stems sparsely branched and ultimate stems robust and unbranched.
