Shrubs 2-4 m tall; young branches gray-white and sparsely pubescent, glabrous and lenticellate at maturity. Petiole 1-5 cm, pilose to glabrous; leaf blade ovate-lanceolate, ovate, or obovate-lanceolate, 7-14 × 2.5-5 cm, membranous, glabrous on both surfaces, base broadly cuneate to rounded, margin entire, apex acuminate or caudate-acuminate, rarely acute; lateral veins 6-8. Inflorescence terminal. Male flowers: sepals ovate, ca. 3 mm; petals obovate, nearly as long as sepals; disk glands broad and flat; stamens 15-30, longer than petals. Female flowers: sepals ovate, slightly unequal, 8-10 mm, accrescent 1-2 cm, margins with dense or sparse 2-5 mm glandular hairs; petals absent; disk annular; ovary 3-locular; styles 3, bipartite. Capsules ovoid-globose, slightly depressed, 8-10 mm in diam., with 3 longi tudinal grooves, glabrous, red-brown. Seeds ca. 6 mm. Fl. (Mar-)May-Oct, fr. (Jun-)Jul-Dec.

The flowering shoots are at the ends of branches. Male and female flowers are separate. The fruit is a capsule 8-10 mm across.
