Characteristics

Woody climber up to 12 m. high.. Stems striate, velutinous when young, with few and inconspicuous lenticels; branchlets spreading at a wide angle; tendrils bifurcate.. Leaves shortly petiolate; lamina coriaceous, narrowly ovate, rarely elliptic, up to 5 cm. long, 2.5 cm. wide (very much reduced on whippy climbing branches), acute or acuminate, rounded at the base, glabrous above, pubescent on the midrib beneath, ciliate when young, shiny, 3-nerved from the base, more strongly so beneath; tertiary venation reticulate, more prominent beneath.. Cymes compound, congested, axillary and terminal, about 1.5 cm. long, pubescent.. Flowers 5-merous.. Calyx-lobes ovate, ciliate.. Corolla white; lobes about as long as the tube, oblong-lanceolate, scarcely acute, about 3 mm. long, glabrous or nearly so; tube subcylindrical, densely pilose within.. Stamens inserted in the sinuses of the corolla-lobes, exserted; anthers about 1 mm. long, a little shorter than the filaments.. Ovary pubescent; style about 2 mm. long, glabrous.. Fruit globose, up to 4 cm. in diameter; rind hard and thin.. Seeds up to 30, variously compressed, up to 13 mm. long, 5 mm. wide.
More
Leaves with a pubescent, 1–4 mm. long petiole; lamina coriaceous, not or slightly shining when dry, elliptic, narrowly elliptic, ovate, or narrowly ovate, 1–5–3 times as long as wide, 2·5–9 x 1·5–4–cm., on main axis and at the bases of the branches comparatively wider and often smaller, acuminate at the apex, cuneate, rounded, or — if ovate — often subcordate at the base, minutely pubescent on main veins above, sparsely pubescent beneath, especially on the veins; one pair of secondary veins from or from somewhat above the base curved along the margin, and accompanied by a faint submarginal pair; tertiary venation reticulate, prominent beneath.
Corolla in the mature bud (3·5)4·7–6 times as long as the calyx, (4)6–7 mm. long, and more or less tapering at the apex, white, outside sparsely pubescent or glabrous, inside densely pilose in the tube, except for the glabrous base; tube (1·3)2·3–3·3 times as long as the calyx, (0–8)1–1–3 times as long as the lobes, (1·8)3–1 mm. long, widely cylindrical; lobes oblong, 2·5–3 times as long as wide (2·4)3–4 x 1–1·2 mm., acute, spreading.
Stamens well–exserted; filaments as long as the anthers or slightly longer, up to 1·5 mm. long, glabrous, inserted at the mouth of the corolla tube; anthers oblong, 1·2–1·5 x 0·6–0·9 mm., bearded with few curled hairs at the base.
Seed pale brown, flattened, more or less plano–convex, obliquely ovate, elliptic, or trullate, usually irregularly curved, 12–14 x 10–11 x 4–5 mm., with thick very short erect hairs, rough.
Sepals connate at the base, circular or nearly so, 1·2–1·5 mm. long, obtuse or rarely acute at the apex, ciliate, mostly sparsely pubescent outside, glabrous inside, without colleters.
Fruit bright yellow, rather small, rather soft, subglobose, about 3 cm. in diam., about 10–20–seeded, with somewhat granular skin, slightly shining. Wall 1 mm. thick when dry.
Pistil pilose, (4)5–7 mm. long; ovary ovoid, 2–2·5 x 1·2–1·5 mm., glabrous at the very base, 2–celled; style (1·5)3–4·5 mm. long, only at the base pilose; stigma capitate.
Branches not lenticellate, medium brown when dry, pubescent; branchlets brown–pubescent, and like the branches not or hardly sulcate when dry.
Inflorescence axillary, congested, 1 x 1 to 2·5 x 2 cm., 2–4 times branched, several– to many–flowered, usually much shorter than the leaves.
Climbing shrub or liana, at least up to 12 m. long and climbing 6 m. high.
In each cell 15–20 ovules.
Flowers 5–merous.
Tendrils paired.
