Characteristics

Woody climber up to 25 m. high.. Stems striate, glabrous or sparsely pubescent with brown hairs, not or rarely lenticellate; branchlets spreading at right angles; tendrils bifurcate.. Leaves shortly petiolate, rather variable in size; lamina coriaceous or subcoriaceous, ovate, obovate or elliptic, 4–10 cm. long, 2–5 cm. wide, acutely and sometimes shortly and abruptly acuminate at the apex, cuneate, rounded or more rarely subcordate at the base, glabrous or pubescent on the midrib beneath, not or scarcely shiny, strongly 3-nerved from the base and with a fainter submarginal pair; nerves prominent except for the impressed midrib above; tertiary venation reticulate.. Cymes compound, many-flowered, congested or spreading, axillary, 2–6 cm. long, pubescent.. Flowers scented, 5-merous.. Calyx-lobes ovate to suborbicular, ciliate.. Corolla white or cream-coloured; lobes as long as or slightly longer than the tube, oblong, subacute, 2.5–4 mm. long, glabrous, erect or reflexed; tube subcylindrical, densely pilose within.. Stamens inserted in the sinuses of the corolla-lobes, exserted; anthers 1.7–2 mm. long, as long as or shorter than the filaments.. Ovary pilose; style 4–6 mm. long, pilose at least at the base..
