Genus

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae

Characteristics

Unarmed tree. Leaves simply paripinnate; stipules apparently represented only by minute conical projections; conspicuous glands absent from petiole and rhachis; leaflets opposite to subopposite, eglandular. Inflorescences of terminal (sometimes falsely lateral) racemes; bracts small, quickly falling. Flowers hermaphrodite. Calyx-segments 5, valvate in bud, quickly falling. Petals 5, subequal. Stamens 10; alternate filaments longer and shorter, all hispidulous below with bulbous-based spreading or deflexed hairs; anthers small, dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits. Hypanthium cup-shaped. Ovary stipitate, with 2 ovules, with sessile glands, otherwise glabrous except for some puberulence on the stipe; style glandular, transversely truncate and not enlarged at apex, ciliate round the very small stigma. Pods flattened, not winged, elastically dehiscent into 2 valves, 1-seeded; valves hard and almost woody, smooth. Seeds transverse, on a short funicle, compressed; testa thin, crustaceous; endosperm absent.
