Characteristics

Tufted, rhizomatous perennials, herbaceous or shrub-like. Roots fibrous. Aerial stems elongated, erect or ascending, leafy throughout. Leaves linear to filiform. Inflorescence terminal, open, cymose, partially bracteate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, pedicellate, nodding. Perianth segments 6, free, petaloid, sub-equal, spreading or recurved, marcescent. Stamens 6, hypogynous, shorter than perianth; filaments slender, becoming kinked below middle, densely hairy distally; anthers slender, ±tapered upwards, dehiscing longitudinally by slits, introrse, recurved or coiled after dehiscence. Ovary superior, 3-locular, ±3-lobed; ovules many per locule, superposed; placentation axile; style filiform; stigma minute, papillose. Fruit a loculicidal capsule. Seeds lenticular, granulate, dull black.
