Characteristics

Coarse bushy perennial herb, basal part seen on only one specimen (woody tap-root c. 8 mm diam. at crown) and height not recorded but possibly reaches 1 m, upper stems c. 3 mm diam., vegetative parts (including calyx) glandular-puberulous together with much coarser patent hairs c. 1-3 mm long, minutely gland-tipped, leafy throughout. Leaves opposite, bases connate, blade c. 12-40 x 10-40 mm, sometimes smaller on the inflorescence, ovate, abruptly contracted to a petiolar part c. 5-30 mm long (nearly equalling to half as long as blade), apex obtuse to subacute, base cordate-cuneate, margins coarsely toothed, the larger teeth denticulate. Flowers either solitary or in 3-flowered cymules in the upper leaf axils, in racemes or panicles. Bracts (as opposed to leaves) present or wanting, if present, a pair immediately below the calyx, c. 2-7 x 0.1-1 mm, linear. Peduncles and pedicels (lowermost) 5-20 mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 1-3 mm long, lobes 4.5-9 x 1-2 mm, the anticous lobes slightly broader than the posticous ones, linear-lanceolate. Corolla tube 8-14 x 1.5-2.5 mm, cylindric, scarcely broadened upwards, limb almost regular, 6-15 mm across, posticous lobes 2.2-5.5 x 1.8-3 mm, anticous lobe 5 x 1.8-3 mm, all oblong or oblong-elliptic, white, tube orange, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.25-0.4 mm long, densely pubescent inside on lower part of lobes and upper part of tube, hairs clavate, up to c. 0.5 mm long. Stamens 4, all deeply included, anticous anthers 0.8-1.1 mm long, posticous anthers 1.1-1.3 mm long, filaments short (c. 1 mm) not decurrent, glabrous. Stigma 0.6-1.5 mm long, gelatinous, deeply included. Style 1.2-2.5 mm long. Ovary 2 x 1-1.2 mm Capsule 4-5 x 2.5-3 mm, glabrous except for a few glistening glands on the sutures. Seeds c. 0.7-0.8 x 0.3 mm, amber-coloured.
