Characteristics

Annual herb, foetid, root simple, main stem erect, c. 150-600 mm tall, often flexuous, branching from the base and higher, branches decumbent or divaricate, minutely glandular particularly on the upper parts, a few scattered glistening glands as well, very coarse scattered hairs present or not, usually present on lower parts, up to 0.5-1 mm long, glandular tip minute, stalk cells relatively enormous, leafy throughout. Leaves opposite below becoming alternate upwards, blade c. 10-45 x 5-25 mm, broadly lanceolate to ovate, apex acute, base cuneate tapering into a petiolar part c. 7-45 mm long (about equalling to half as long as blade), margins coarsely and irregularly serrate, both surfaces minutely glandular when young, often ± glabrescent except for a few coarse hairs mainly on margins and petiolar part. Flowers in 1-11-flowered irregular cymules racemosely arranged in the upper leaf axils, often loosely panicled. Bracts (as opposed to leaves) wanting or present and then c. 34 x 0.2-0.4 mm, linear. Peduncles up to 40 mm long, usually short, pedicels up to c. 10 mm long, often recaulescent. Calyx ± bilabiate, tube 0.5-1 mm long, lobes 2.5-4 x 0.6-0.8 mm, linear-lanceolate, glabrous except for minute glands on lower margins. Corolla tube 10-11.5 x 1.8-2.3 mm across the mouth, narrowly funnel-shaped, limb almost regular, 7-8 mm across, posticous lobes 2.3-3 x 1.6-2.4 mm, anticous lobe 2.1-3 x 1.7-2.2 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white to pale pink or pale violet, tube yellow or orange, glabrous outside, bearded with clavate hairs all round mouth, these rarely wanting, glistening glands also present. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.5-1.1 mm long, very shortly exerted, filaments c. 1-2 mm long, posticous anthers 0.8-1.5 mm long, included, filaments c. 1 mm, glabrous. Stigma 1.5-2 mm long, just included or shortly exerted. Style 6-10 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2.5 x 1-1.5 mm Capsules 5-8 x 3-4 mm, glabrous except for a few glistening glands on the sutures. Seeds 0.4-0.75 x 0.25-0.4 mm, amber-coloured.
