Characteristics

Subshrub to 30 cm high, dioecious; stems many from an elongate napiform rootstock. Branchlets to 17 cm long, ribbed. Stipules erect to spreading, narrowly triangular, 0.4–0.8 mm long. Stem leaves laminate, similar to branchlet leaves, or reduced leaf-like or scale-like. Branchlet leaves: petiole 0.4–1.2 mm long; lamina linear, narrowly elliptic, elliptic, obovate or broadly obovate, 11.5–35 mm long, 1.5–20 mm wide, obtuse or acute, glabrous, papillose or scabrous. Male flowers: 1–5 per fascicle; pedicels 0.6–1.3 mm long; perianth tubular; sepals connate for more than half their length forming a tube 1.7–4.4 mm long with shortly acuminate lobes 1–1.8 mm long, glabrous, yellow; filaments and connectives connate; androphore 2.8–3.3 mm long, apiculate with connective appendages ± free, spreading; anthers linear, 1.7–2.2 mm long. Female flowers: solitary; pedicels 0.8–1.5 mm long, elongating to 9.5 mm in fruit; sepals free, linear to spathulate, 2.5–4.3 mm long, 0.7–1 mm wide, obtuse or acute, glabrous, yellow; ovary ovoid to globose, glabrous; styles free, erect, bifid. Capsule ovoid or subglobose, 7.3–8.5 mm long, 7–8 mm diam., glabrous, red-brown. Seeds 6.9–7.6 mm long, smooth, red-brown.
