Characteristics

Erect, glabrous, ± glaucous annual or short-lived perennial herb to 60 cm high, sometimes woody at base, monoecious. Branchlets to 27 cm long, ribbed. Stipules narrowly triangular, 0.8–1 mm long, acute, pale. Stem leaves laminate, similar to branchlet leaves. Branchlet leaves: petiole 1–1.4 mm long; lamina narrowly ovate, narrowly elliptic or linear, 7.5–50 mm long, 1.6–8 mm wide, obtuse, glaucous abaxially. Male flowers: 1–4-flowered fascicles; peduncles to 2.5 mm long, bracteate; pedicels 0.3–1.6 mm long; sepals free, incurved, elliptic, 0.6–1.2 mm long, c. 0.5 mm wide, obtuse, green; stamens with filaments connate; androphore c. 0.6 mm long; anthers elliptic, c. 0.4 mm long. Female flowers: solitary; pedicels 1.5–4.8 mm long, up to 6.5 mm in fruit; sepals elliptic or obovate, 1–2.3 mm long, 0.6–0.8 mm wide, obtuse, green; ovary ovoid, glabrous; stigmas free, erect, bifid. Capsule subglobose, 4.7–6 mm diam. Seeds 2.8–4 mm long, verrucose, with warts often aligned transversely, brown.
