Characteristics

Glabrous shrub to 2 m high, monoecious. Branchlets to 8.5 cm long, ribbed, papillose or asperulate, rarely glabrous. Stipules triangular, 0.4–0.8 mm long. Stem leaves: lower laminate, scale-like distally. Branchlet leaves: petiole 0.6–1.5 mm long; lamina elliptic to obovate, 3.5–26 mm long, 2.5–15.5 mm wide, recurved at margins, obtuse, mucronate, sometimes papillose, discolorous, mostly glaucous abaxially. Male flowers: 1–10 per fascicle; peduncles to 3 mm long; pedicels 1.5–3 mm long; sepals obovate, connate for about half their length, forming a campanulate tube 1–1.5 mm long with obtuse lobes 0.5–1.2 mm long, white; filaments and connectives connate; androphore 2.2–2.5 mm long; anthers linear, c. 1.8 mm long, apically free. Female flowers: solitary; pedicels 1.5–4.5 mm long; sepals free, spreading, obovate, 1.8–5.5 mm long, 1.4–2.4 mm wide, obtuse, white; ovary ovoid, glabrous; stigmas spreading, clavate or notched. Capsule ovoid to ellipsoid, 5.2–5.6 mm long; 5.5–5.8 mm wide, glabrous, green, surrounded by enlarged reflexed sepals. Seeds 4–5.5 mm long, pitted, pale brown.
