Marine herb; rhizome slender, to 3 mm in diam.; each node with 1– 3 little-branched or unbranched roots and an erect stem 0.5– 7 cm long with 2– 3 leaves; internodes 1.5– 3.5 cm long; scales 5 mm, perishing early.. Leaf with sheath often tinged reddish, 1.5– 4 cm long, or at most 7 mm long in inflorescence leaf sheaths; blade 7– 30 cm long, 1– 2 mm in diam., narrowed at base.. Inflorescence a stalked cyme to 10 cm long, separate from the leaves; staminate flower with pedicel up to 7 mm long, anthers ovate, 4 mm long; pistillate flower sessile, ovary ellipsoid, 3– 4 mm long, style 2 mm long, stigmas 4– 8 mm long.. Leaf sheath 15–40 mm long. Leaf blade to 30 cm long, 0.5–1.5 mm diam.; longitudinal veins 9–13, in T.S. one central, the others peripheral. Inflorescence with floral leaf sheath to 7 mm long and blade 4–7 mm long. Male flower: stalk 5–10 mm long; anthers 2.5–4 mm long. Female flower: ovary 2 mm long; style 2 mm long; stigmas 3.5–5 mm long. Fruit obliquely ellipsoid, angular, 3–5 mm × 1–2 mm; endocarp lacinia blunt-tipped.
