Species

Bryophytes > Dicranales > Calymperaceae > Syrrhopodon

Characteristics

Plants small to medium-sized, dark green with hyaline leaf bases. Stems 5-10 mm long. Leaves spirally twisted or inrolled above when dry; ligulate above obovate base, 2.5-4.0 mm long; apex acute; margins serrate to toothed at apex; border cells linear, hyaline; costa percurrent to mucronate. Upper laminal cells quadrate, papillose; cancellinae rectangular to quadrate. Gemmae clavate. Capsule short-cylindrical, peristome teeth linear. Recognised by the spirally twisted, dark green, upper leaf lamina and conspicuous, sheathing, hyaline bases.
More
Plants caespitose, dark green to brownish, to 1 cm. Leaves monomorphic, 2-3 mm, crispate-contorted when dry; distal lamina reflexed at shoulders, usually folded when wet, broadly linear-acuminate, apex obtuse; margins bordered all around with elongate hyaline cells, mostly toothed only at apex but rarely with denticulations at shoulders; medial cells obscure because of papillosity, 7.5-8.5 µm, with stout, multifid papillae ad-and abaxially; cancellinae rounded distally. Gemmae clavate-fusiform, smooth, sparse, on adaxial apex of leaf.
