Small to fairly large tree or occasionally shrubby, (1.5–)3–25 m tall, typically with very dense bushy rounded profusely branched crown, glabrous; branches 4-angled, the angles acute or almost winged, 2–7 mm wide; bark grey or grey-brown, slightly reticulate or rough.. Leaves pinkish green when young, elliptic, broadly elliptic or almost round, 1–6(–8) cm long, 1–4(–6) cm wide (see note), rounded or less often subacute or shortly acuminate at the apex, broadly cuneate to rounded or slightly cordate at base, sometimes shortly decurrent into the petiole, coriaceous; lateral nerves 12–15, costa deeply impressed above, venation reticulate; petiole 1–5 mm long, often as wide as long, rugose, channelled above.. Inflorescences terminal, sessile with no true peduncle or less often pedunculate, obpyramidal-corymbose or ovoid, (1–)2.5–4 cm long, (1.5–)3–5(–7) cm wide, usually trichotomous at base; primary axes 4-angled, typically 1–2 cm long, 1.2–3 mm wide.. Flowers pinkish, in glomerules, subsessile, the calyx-tube basally scarcely developed into a pseudopedicel; buds 6 mm long, 4 mm wide.. Calyx-tube 6 mm long, 4–5 mm wide at apex, slightly angled, produced above into a 3 mm cup; lobes 4, purplish, broadly rounded, 1.7 mm long, 2–2.5 mm wide at base.. Petals 4, ± free (?), pale green or purplish green, concave, ± round, 4.5 mm long, 5 mm wide, soon falling.. Stamens numerous; filaments white, 6–8 mm long; anthers 1 mm long, with small red gland below apex of connective.. Style lilac-pink, 6 mm long.. Fruit purple, subglobose, 0.8–1.6 cm long, 0.7–1.4 cm wide, crowned by calyx-lobes.
