Characteristics

A small tree. It grows 16 m tall. The trunk is twisted. It has stilt roots. The trunk can be 40 cm across. The branches are low down. The leaf base is wedge shaped. The leaves are opposite and simple. They are 7-18 cm long by 3-9 cm wide. The fruit are 3.5 cm across. The ripe fruit are dark purple.

Environment

Forests, often near water and in swamp forest, usually at elevations of 500-2,000 metres. In the Bahuzi-Biéga montane forest in eastern DR Congo it is characteristic of montane rainforest at elevations above 2,300 metres.
