Taenitis Willd. ex Schkuhr

Genus

Pteridophytes > Polypodiales > Pteridaceae > Pteridoideae

Characteristics

Rhizome creeping, the young parts protected by dark glossy rigid bristles. Fronds monomorphic or slightly to strongly dimorphic (fertile fronds with narrower lamina or pinnae). Stipe dark, glossy, the upper side grooved towards the lamina. Lamina simple, 1-pinnate or rarely (not in Australia) trilobed, with a conform terminal segment on pinnate fronds. Pinnae entire, narrowly elliptic, ±coriaceous, glabrous; venation reticulate, the veins forming 2 or more series of narrow oblique subequal areoles, without free included veinlets, sometimes free at the margin. Sori either single and ±continuous between midrib and margin of pinnae, or spreading along individual veins, or discrete and scattered; indusium absent, but sporangia ±protected when immature by multicellular paraphyses. Spores trilete, tetrahedral-globose, usually tuberculate.
More
Plants terrestrial. Rhizome creeping, apex covered with dark, rigid bristles; bristles with a single row of cells at apex and a few rows of cells at base. Fronds monomorphic or dimorphic; stipes with 1, 2, or 4 vascular bundles near base, adaxially grooved; lamina simple or 1-pinnate, with terminal pinnae similar to lateral pinnae; pinnae simple, entire, thickly papery to leathery, glabrous; veins reticulate, areoles without included free veinlets. Sori linear and forming a narrow longitudinal band between midrib and margin, or borne irregularly along veins, or converging to orbicular or oblong sori, or in long inframarginal grooves, or acrostichoid on abaxial surface of contracted fertile pinnae, exindusiate; paraphyses abundant, multicellular. Spores trilete, tetrahedral-globose, with tubercles or rodlets. n = 44, 108, 110, 114.
Sori broad, elongate, parallel to costa and edge, or more or less spreading along the veins.
