Characteristics

Plant to 4 m tall. Leaves subsessile, oblong, oblong-obovate or sometimes lanceolate, glabrous except acuminate tip; ligule truncate; sheath glabrous. Inflorescence pineapple-like, 7-20 cm long, terminal on leaf shoot, or borne on an erect peduncle 0.4-2 m long arising from rhizome; bracts bright red, coriaceous, tips strongly recurved. Flowers barely exceeding bracts. Calyx red. Corolla yellow. Capsule not seen.
