Characteristics

Plants with stems spreading to 1 m. or so, glabrous except for the ciliolate bracts and calyx.. Leaves mostly opposite or subopposite; petiole 3–10 mm. long; lamina ± coriaceous, green to glaucous, linear-lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, ovate or somewhat oblanceolate, 4–8(–17) cm. long, 0.5–4(–12) cm. wide, acute to obtuse at the apex, cuneate to rounded or shortly cordate at the base, with 4–6 pairs of curved-ascending lateral nerves, the lower ones occasionally more strongly ascending.. Umbels mostly in axils, occasionally predominantly at older nodes, (4–)6–8-flowered; peduncle 2–4(–8) mm. long; pedicels 1–3 mm. long from shallow sockets; bract shallowly saucer-shaped, with a small triangular limb, 1.5–2 mm. long.. Receptacle barrel-shaped, longer than calyx, 1.5–2 mm. long.. Calyx shallow, 0.5–1 mm. long.. Corolla-tube (2–)2.5–3.5(–4) cm. long, pink to red, rarely white apart from filament-lines, with pale heads generally darkening just prior to anthesis; bud-heads oblong-ellipsoid to narrowly ovoid, angled, ribbed to narrowly winged (wings less than 0.5 mm. wide), occasionally produced into small points at the apex, 3–3.5 mm. long, 1.8–2.5 mm. in diameter; basal swelling ellipsoid-obovoid, 3.5–6 mm. long, 3–4 mm. in diameter, with the tube constricted for 3–5 mm. above; lobes 6–7 mm. long, reflexed, linear-elliptic to lanceolate, 3–4 mm. long, 1–1.2 mm. wide.. Stamens white to red; tooth 0.5–0.7 mm. long; anthers 2–2.5 mm. long.. Style with neck 2–2.5 mm. long; stigma capitate, 0.8–1 mm. across.. Berry orange or red when ripe, ovoid-globose to depressed-globose, 8–9 mm. long, 7–9 mm. in diameter, with a small persistent calyx.
