Perennial, acaulescent herb, with milky latex. Leaves in rosettes; blade up to 30 mm long, oblong in outline, pinnately lobed, with 4-6 narrow lobes on each side, lobes acute, patent or slightly recurved, sinuses usually sharply dentate; petiole purplish, not winged. Heads ligulate, solitary, terminal; peduncle up to 60 mm long, hollow, often purplish, cobwebby at first, glabrescent. Involucral bracts biseriate; inner ± 10 mm long, margins white-membranous; outer ± 7 mm long, reflexed, often purplish, with small hump on back near apex. Flowers: ligules yellow, purplish on lower surface; style branches black when dry; Aug.-Nov., Feb. Fruit with cypsela bright red-brown, fusiform, ± 2.5 mm long, with muricate ribs, narrowed and shortly conical apically, cone 0.75-1.0 mm long, with 7.5-11.0 mm long beak. Pappus of many, creamy white, barbellate bristles.
