Acaulescent, perennial herb, up to 0.15 m high, with milky latex. Leaves rosulate, up to 200 mm long, oblong in outline, pinnately lobed, with 4-6 narrow lobes on each side, lobes acute, patent or slightly recurved, sinuses usually sharply dentate; petioles purplish, not winged. Capitula ligulate, solitary, terminal, pedunculate; peduncle hollow, often purplish, cobwebby at first, glabrescent; involucral bracts in 2 rows, inner bracts ± 10 mm long, margins white-membranous, outer bracts ± 7 mm long, reflexed, often purplish. Florets yellow, purplish on the back. Flowering time Oct.-Dec. Pappus of many, creamy white, barbellate bristles. Cypselae bright red-brown, conical, ribbed, with a long beak.

Ligules yellow, purplish on the back. Style branches black, pollen present. Achenes bright red-brown, c. 2.5 mm long, cone 0.75-1 mm, beak 7.5-11 mm. Pappus creamy white. Sexual, facultative agamosperm or obligate agamosperm.
