Leaves up to 25 cm long, lobes 4-5, apical lobe triangular, others broadly to narrowly triangular, acute, patent or slightly recurved, both margins often filiform-dentate, sinuses filiform-dentate to acutely lobulate, petioles not winged, they and the midrib often purplish. Scapes often much shorter than the leaves at anthesis, up to 30 cm in fruit, purplish, white-cottony, glabrescent. Heads 3.5-4 cm across when fully expanded. Inner involucral bracts 12-18 mm long, lanceolate, membranous-winged in the lower half, glaucous at the base, outer (7-)10 x 2, usually with a small hump or at least a callus on the back near the tip, suffused purple there, reflexed. Ligules yellow, greyish on the back. Style branches blackish, pollen present. Achenes straw-coloured or greyish, 3-3.5 mm long, cone 1-1.5 mm, beak 8-11 mm. Pappus creamy white. Agamospermous.
Acaulescent, perennial herb, up to 0.3 m high, with milky latex. Leaves rosulate, pinnately lobed, with 4 or 5 lobes on each side, apical lobe triangular, others broadly to narrowly triangular, acute, patent or slightly recurved, both margins often filiform-dentate, sinuses filiform-dentate to acutely lobulate; petioles not winged, they and midrib often purplish. Capitula ligulate, solitary, terminal, pedunculate; peduncle hollow, purplish, white-cottony, glabrescent, initially much shorter than leaves, elongating in fruit; outer involucral bracts (7-)10 x 2 mm, reflexed. Florets yellow. Cypselae straw-coloured, greyish on back, conical, ribbed, with long beak. Flowering time July-Oct. Pappus of many, creamy white, barbellate bristles.
