Characteristics

Perennial, acaulescent herb, with milky latex. Leaves in rosettes; blade up to 150 mm long, oblong in outline, sinuate to runcinate-pinnatifid, with 4 or 5 lobes, broadly to narrowly triangular, acute, patent or slightly recurved, both margins often filiform-dentate, sinuses filiform-dentate to acutely lobulate, apical lobe triangular; petiole often purplish, not winged. Heads ligulate, solitary, terminal; peduncle usually shorter than leaves at flowering, up to 150 mm long in fruit, purplish, white-cottony, glabrescent. Involucral bracts biseriate, imbricate; inner 12-18 mm long, membranous-winged in lower half; outer up to 10 mm long, with small hump on back near apex, purple, reflexed. Flowers: ligules yellow, greyish on lower surface; style branches blackish when dry; Feb., May-Oct. Fruit with cypsela straw-coloured or greyish, fusiform, 3.03.5 mm long, with muricate ribs, narrowed and conical apically, cone 1.0-1.5 mm long, with 8-11 mm long beak. Pappus of many, creamy white, barbellate bristles.
