Perennial, acaulescent herb, with milky latex. Leaves in rosettes; blade runcinate-pinnatifid, with 3-6 lobes, apical lobe mostly very large, triangular or elliptic, acute, margins coarsely and sharply dentate, teeth recurved, lateral lobes triangular, acute, recurved, upper margins convex, laciniate-dentate, lower margins straight or curved, often entire; petiole short, winged, purplish, thinly white-hairy. Heads ligulate, solitary, terminal; peduncle usually up to 300 mm long in fruit, glabrous or nearly so. Involucral bracts biseriate, imbricate; inner ± 16 mm long, narrowly membranous winged; outer up to 12 mm long, reflexed. Flowers: ligules yellow, dark on lower surface; style branches greyish when dry; Sep.-Dec. Fruit with cypsela greyish, fusiform, 2.50-2.75 mm long, with muricate ribs, narrowed and conical apically, cone 0.5-0.75 mm long, with 7 mm long beak. Pappus of many, creamy white, barbellate bristles.
