Leaves up to c. 18 cm long, lobes 3-6, apical lobe mostly very large, triangular or elliptic, acute, margins coarsely and sharply toothed, teeth recurved, lateral lobes triangular, acute, recurved, upper margin convex, laciniate-toothed, lower margin straight or curved, often entire, petiole short, winged, purplish, thinly white hairy on petiole, midrib, and above. Scapes up to 30 cm at fruiting, glabrous or nearly so. Heads up to 5.5 cm across when fully expanded. Inner involucral bracts c. 16 mm long, lanceolate, narrowly membranous-winged, outer bracts c. 10-12 x 2 mm, reflexed. Ligules yellow, dark below. Style branches greyish, pollen present. Achenes greyish, 2.5-2.75 mm long, cone 0.5-0.75 mm, beak 7 mm. Pappus creamy white.

Flowering time Nov. Pappus of many, creamy white, barbellate bristles. Cypselae greyish, conical, ribbed, with long beak.
