Characteristics

Perennial, acaulescent herb, with milky latex. Leaves in rosettes; blade runcinate-pinnatifid, with 4 or 5 lobes, apical lobe triangular, all lobes acute, recurved, margins ± straight, entire or dentate; petiole short, winged, purplish or not. Heads ligulate, solitary, terminal; peduncle up to 350 mm long, initially white-cottony, glabrescent. Involucral bracts biseriate, imbricate; inner ± 16 mm long, membranous winged in lower half; outer up to 8 mm long, reflexed. Flowers: ligules yellow, greyish on lower surface; style branches yellow when dry; Jun. Fruit with cypsela pale brown, fusiform, 3.5 mm long, with muricate ribs, narrowed and conical apically, cone 1 mm long, with 9 mm long beak. Pappus of many, creamy white, barbellate bristles.
