Characteristics

Leaves up to 15 cm long, either spathulate in outline and more or less unlobed or with c. 3 lobes, apex broadly triangular, lateral lobes, if present, triangular, acute, tips somewhat recurved, margins nearly entire, sinuses filiform dentate, if unlobed, then acutely lobulate and filiform-toothed, farinose or woolly when young, glabrescent, petiole not winged, purplish, slightly woolly, also on the midrib below. Scapes up to 25 cm, white-woolly, glabrescent. Heads c. 3.5 cm across when fully expanded. Inner involucral bracts c. 10 mm long, lanceolate, margins white-membranous, outer bracts 5-7 x 1.25-2 mm, purple-tinged, thickened on the backs near the tips, reflexed. Ligules yellow, reddish on the backs. Style branches yellow or discoloured yellow, pollen present. Achenes greyish, 3-3.5 mm long, cone 1-1.25 mm, beak 7 mm. Pappus creamy white. The species is sexual but self incompatible, therefore small unfertilized heads are often present.
