Characteristics

Perennial, foetid shrub to herb, up to 2 m high; stems narrowly winged at decurrent petioles, leafy; glabrous. Leaves opposite, ± ovate to broadly elliptic, finely dentate, shiny. Flowers pedicellate in leafy, pedunculate, often 3-7-flowered, terminal or axillary cymes. Calyx: lobes 5, lanceolate-oblong. Corolla ± regular; tube cylindrical, ± straight; lobes 5, patent, blue, mauve, purple or pink. Flowering time mainly July-Jan. Fruit a fleshy, ± globose berry or drupe.
