Characteristics

Shrub, up to 1 m high. Leaves alternate, lanceolate, margins entire, sessile, bases decurrent on stem in long narrow wings, discolorous, green above drying grey, white-tomentose below. Capitula disciform, in terminal clusters forming a corymbose panicle; involucral bracts in several rows, imbricate, apex shortly exceeding florets, radiating, opaque milk-white or occasionally pink. Receptacle flat, paleate, paleae resembling inner involucral bracts. Outer florets female, corolla purple, narrowly tubular or filiform. Disc florets outnumbering female florets, corolla purple, tubular below, campanulate above, 5-lobed. Flowering time Mar.-May. Pappus of scabrid bristles above, cilia ± fused, shaft scabridulous, base nude, not cohering. Cypselae oblong, with rounded hairs.
