Characteristics

A short-lived perennial up to 60 cm. tall, the stems densely appressed silvery.. Leaf-rhachis up to 5 cm. long, including a petiole of under 2 mm., not or hardly prolonged beyond lateral leaflets; stipules narrowly triangular-subulate, up to 5 mm. long; leaflets 5–29, cuneate-elliptic or cuneate-oblong, up to 15 mm. long by 4 mm. wide, rounded or retuse at the apex, glabrous or, less often, shortly pubescent above, densely appressed silvery beneath, the principal nerves ± 7 on each side, not prominent.. Flowers orange salmon in lax terminal pseudoracemes and upper leaf-axils; pedicels brown, ± 3 mm. long; bracts narrowly triangular, shorter; minute bracteoles sometimes present at calyx-base.. Calyx brown appressed tomentose; tube ± 2 mm. long; lowest tooth triangular, 3.5 mm. long; upper pair one-third united, 2 mm. long.. Standard golden-brown silky outside, 9 × 7 mm.; keel glabrous.. Upper filament free, widened 1 mm. above base; filament-sheath ± 5 mm., free parts 1.5–2 mm., anthers 0.5 mm. long.. Style glabrous, slightly curved, penicillate, ± 2 mm. long.. Pod somewhat upcurved towards the tip with a slightly deflexed style-base, ± 4 cm. long by 3 mm. wide, silvery appressed tomentose at the sides, black on the sutures.. Seeds 5–9, smooth, longitudinal, rounded-oblong, ± 3.5 × 2 mm.; hilum subcentral, hardly arillate.

Leaves pinnate with (4)6–11 pairs of leaflets; petiole 0.1–0.3 cm long, petiole and rachis together 1.4–5 cm long, pubescent like the stem; leaflets (5)7–16 × (1)1.5–3.5(4.5) mm, oblanceolate to narrow-oblanceolate, 3–6 times as long as broad, subcuneate at the base, rounded to emarginate at the apex; upper surface glabrous or shortly pubescent, lower surface densely appressed-pubescent with silvery hairs; stipules 3–5(6) × c.0.2 mm, ± subulate.
Calyx 4–5 mm long, covered with longish, appressed to ascending brown or grey hairs; lateral teeth about equalling the tube, upper teeth connate for ½–? their length.
Flowers in terminal and axillary racemes 3–18 cm long and in the axils of up to 5 upper leaves; bracts 1–2.5 × c.0.2 mm, ± subulate; pedicels 1.5–3 mm long.
Seeds 8–9, 2–2.8 × 1–1.6 × 0.8–1 mm, oblongoid, with a very small aril excentrically placed on one of the longer sides.
Pods 32–47 × 3–3.5 mm, margins with dark brown hairs, surfaces with light brownish-grey to silvery appressed hairs.
Annual or perhaps sometimes a short-lived perennial, with erect, branched stems 45–150 cm high.
Petals 7–9 mm long, orange, red or pink or sometimes somewhat purplish.
Ovary pubescent; style glabrous, with pencillate tip.
