Characteristics

Rootstock perennial, woody; stems often reddish, sparsely strigulose, 30–40 cm. tall.. Leaf-rhachis up to 7 cm. long, including a petiole of up to 4 cm., prolonged up to 7 mm. beyond lateral leaflets; stipules linear-oblong, up to 8 mm. long; leaflets 1–11, usually 3–9, cuneate-oblong, up to 10 cm. long and 25 mm. wide, rounded or emarginate at the apex, glabrous above, sparsely strigulose beneath, the nerves prominent on both surfaces, often reddish, ± 10 chief ones on each side.. Pseudoraceme terminal, 4–14 cm. long, moderately dense on a peduncle often longer than itself; bracts short, triangular, very caducous; pedicels up to 7 mm. long.. Calyx shortly golden tomentose; teeth triangular, the upper pair connivent, half united, ±1.5 mm. long, the lateral 2 mm., the lowest 3 mm. long.. Corolla mauve, the standard golden brown silky tomentose outside, ± 16 mm. long by 15 mm. wide; keel glabrous, ± 10 mm. from base to bend and 10 mm. from bend to tip.. Upper filament lightly attached, callous, bent and widened 1 mm. above the base; filament-sheath 9 mm., free parts 5–6 mm., anthers 1.3 mm. long.. Ovules 3–5; style ± 10 mm. long, bent sharply near the base, pubescent throughout, tapering gradually to a fine point.. Pod ascending, slightly downcurved, ± 4.5 cm. long by 8 mm. wide, minutely stiff-pubescent.. Seeds (immature) 2–4.
